Readers of this blog have received regular bulletins about the progress of the 10-volume series, the Edinburgh Companions to Global Christianity. This might well be the last one. On Tuesday we held a “celebratory seminar” at Edinburgh University to mark the completion of the series.
For Todd Johnson and I, as the Series Editors, it was a marvellous opportunity to celebrate with our fellow editors and contributors as well as with the unsung heroes behind the scenes – the superb editorial team at Edinburgh University Press, our ever-meticulous copy-editors, the indefatigable demographic team in the USA, our successive managing editors of each volume, and the Editorial Advisory Board that we formed for each volume.
We have benefitted from much critique and comment over the years, but I often reflect on a remark made by Hugh Morrison of the University of Otago about our Oceania volume. Hugh captured what we were trying to do as we took account of the presence of Christianity in every different part of the world:
This significant volume is a definitive contribution to Oceanic Christian self-understanding. It is impressive in both its scope and its fine-grained attention to the nuances and diversities of Pacific belief and practice. Sensitively framed critical insider analysis provides a local voice, rendering it an accessible and valuable regional and global resource.
Hugh Morrison, University of Otago
Our hope is that the same might be said for every volume and every different part of the world and that the Companions will be a valuable resource for anyone seeking to understand Christianity today, both locally and globally.
