It was in 2013 that Todd Johnson and I embarked on what looked like a daunting mountain to climb – a 10-volume series of reference books that would offer an account of Christianity in every country in the world. Twelve years later the series is complete. Now we look forward to celebrating with colleagues, contributors and publisher at a seminar hosted by Edinburgh University on Tuesday 11 November.
The fact that we now have a chapter on every country in the world, as well as a full set of chapters on confessional traditions and salient themes, is down to the quality of our contributors. The series comprises some 5,000 pages and around 2 million words but what makes them count is the global web of academic collaboration that has created them. What a privilege it has been to work with so many talented and insightful colleagues – almost 400 in total.
We hope it offers a comprehensive and realistic account of the presence of Christianity in every part of the world. The books are expensive but they are built to last and we hope they can serve for a long time to come as a reliable account of the state-of-play with global Christianity in the early part of the 21st century.
