Since we launched the first programme of postgraduate studies at Zomba Theological University three years ago, our students have been squeezed into corners of a campus that was built half-a-century ago to provide for ministerial training. Resourcefulness has been called for, and has been abundantly supplied by both students and Faculty. The experience, however, sparked the idea of creating a purpose-built facility.
Now this dream is becoming a reality. Thanks to the generosity of partners who have come to share the vision, some rundown and under-used buildings are being renovated and repurposed to provide for postgraduate programmes. A generously proportioned teaching and consulting building is being complemented by a cafeteria and bedroom block.
With many students being part-time and travelling from various different parts of the country for intensive study periods at ZTU, it will make for a much better experience to have safe and comfortable accommodation, as well as a cafeteria where we can enjoy eating and conversing together.
These are the facilities that are taking shape before our eyes as a skilled construction team create the new Centre. Standing within a stone’s throw of Zomba’s historic Presbyterian Church, it evokes the combination of prayer, study and community life that has shaped history in the past. Our hope is that it will do so again in the future, to make a difference in Malawi and far beyond.
